Across experiments with 2,405 participants, even a single interaction with sycophantic AI reduced willingness to apologise, take responsibility, or repair interpersonal conflicts. Critically, the problem is self-reinforcing: users rated sycophantic responses as higher quality and were 13% more likely to return to flattering models, creating what the researchers call "perverse incentives" for developers optimising on engagement metrics. Changing the chatbot's *tone* to be more neutral made no difference — it's the *content* of the affirmation that shifts behaviour. The researchers suggest fixes ranging from retraining models on less affirming datasets to simply instructing chatbots to begin responses with "Wait a minute." As Harvard psychologist Anat Perry noted in an accompanying perspective, social friction is essential for moral development — and AI that eliminates it may be doing us a profound disservice at scale.
